A hydronic heating system is a closed-loop system, meaning the water stays in the piping. Typically the base of a hydronic heating system is a heating system operated with a boiler. Radiators, baseboard heating and even some radiant floor heating systems tend to be hydronic / closed-loop systems. Most of these types of systems use water, although some can use other liquids. Like most heating systems, it is controlled by a thermostat to turn it on and off, and control the temperature.

Designed for residential hydronic heating systems, the Armstrong Astro 2 290CI 3-Speed Cast Iron Circulator circulates the water in your closed-loop system. The circulator helps move the hot water through your system, ensuring the hot water reaches the furthest point of your system. The pump includes an impeller motor that moves the hot water from your boiler through the pipes, while at the same time drawing cold water into the boiler to start the heating process. If you notice loud or strange noises or leaking, it is a good sign that your circulator needs replacing. A leaky pump might cause a drop in water pressure in your home, resulting in less heat reaching all areas of your home.

The 290CI 3-Speed Cast Iron Circulator offers a 0 - 52 GPM flow rate. It will operate in conditions where the maximum ambient temperature is 104°F (40°C) and a maximum water / liquid temperature of 230°F (110°C) with a max. pressure of 150 psi. It offers 3 speeds and can accommodate many brand replacements. Additionally, it is a maintenance free circulator. Additionally, the 290CI includes a check valve. A check valve is a safety measure to protect your pipes from  backflow. It allows the fluid in the pipes to only flow one way. If the flow begins to turn, the valve closes protecting the pipes and your usable water from unwanted contaminants. It is for use with Water Only and Water/ Glycol Mixture (Ethylene, Propylene only) hydronic heating systems. It can be used to replace several brands of circulators. For a comparison of popular circulators, please see the Cross Reference Chart under Manuals and Guides.
