Amtrol ExTrol Expansion Tanks for residential hydronic heating systems take on the expanded fluid in closed-loop systems. The purpose of an expansion tank is to control pressure build-up while improving comfort levels and reducing energy costs. The EX Series is specifically for use in non-potable, closed, hydronic heating and chilled water systems.

The EX-15 is appropriately sized for expansion overflow for hydronic heating systems. Depending on your type of system, the EX15 is designed to work with BTU outputs of 25,000 - 50,000 systems. As shown in the sizing chart below, the EX-15 can be used with several different types of closed-loop systems. The EX-15 has a tank volume of 2 gallons.

The sizing is based on water fluid; 12 PSIG fill; 30 PSIG Relief Valve and 180°F average temperature. If your system does not meet these qualifications, you may need to look to the SX Series for the correct sizing for your needs.

Typically, as a homeowner, your heater is not something you look at or check on a regular basis. You install it (or have it installed) and forget about it as long as you have heat when you need it! You never think about the hot water expansion and the damage it could do. The purpose of an Expansion Tank is to act as an overflow for this excess water created by the heated water while maintaining safe expansion pressure. The diaphragm inside the steel tank is constructed of thick, heavy duty Butyl/EPDM for a long service life.

Extrol Expansion Tanks also have an InSight Indicator Cap. This patented sight glass that changes color when your expansion tank needs to be replaced! This alerts the homeowner and/or plumber before damage can occur. The sight glass will remain clear/white under normal operation. However, when it becomes discolored, it is time to replace your tank. The InSight Indicator Cap is located at the bottom of the expansion tank.
