What Size Air Conditioner do I Need?
Air Conditioner and Heater Calculators

Before we get into how many BTU’s you need, we should start with what are BTU’s? BTU stands for British Thermal Unit which is a unit used to measure energy. It is most commonly used to represent the power or capacity of heating and air conditioning units as well as stoves and grills. BTU as we use it really stands for BTU’s per hour or Btu/h.

You might also hear the term “ton” used when referring to larger air conditioners or heaters. One ton in that case is equal to 12,000 BTU’s. So for example, a 36,000 BTU mini split system might sometimes be referred to as a 3 ton system.

But now for the most important part, how many BTU’s do you need to heat or cool your room? We have answers for both! Heaters and air conditioners work differently, so there are different calculations for both but luckily we have you covered. We have developed two different calculators to help you figure out what you need. If you are considering a combined heating and cooling unit we recommend just using the air conditioning calculator and using the heating calculator strictly for heaters and furnaces.
