It is not often that we think about hot water heaters - that is until it is too late! The lifespan of a conventional storage tank water heater is about 10 to 15 years. Is it time to replace yours? With a Bradford White Indirect Fired Water Heater you may not ever have to replace your water heater again!

This water heater capacity is 50 gallons of water. It is powered by natural gas. The Department of Energy estimates the average shower uses about 10 gallons of hot water. A standard direct fired hot water heater with a 50 gallon tank should be able to handle 4 showers in an hour with some additional left over hot water to enjoy a shave and a quick wash up at the sink or to run a dishwasher. However, with an indirect fired hot water heater, you are using your boiler to heat the water and the first hour rating is much higher with this type of system.

An indirect fired hot water heater uses the heat generated in your boiler to heat the water. A built-in coil inside the water heater connects to your boiler at the top and bottom of the coil. The water from your boiler circulates through the coil inside the tank, while heating the water in your tank. By using this process, your incoming cool water is continually heated, giving you an almost endless supply of hot water.

There is no burner or internal pilot system in an indirect fired water heater, therefore the life of your hot water tank is prolonged. When you use your boiler as a heat source for your hot water, you will get the same efficiency as your boiler with less heat loss. So if you have a high efficiency boiler, you will get high efficiency results when heating your water! And, no, you do not need to run your boiler all summer long with an indirect water heater, the boiler will only fire up when you need hot water. You may even be able to use a smaller tank. With all the advantages of an indirect fired hot water heater, you may even save money on operating costs.

Bradford White has engineered their line of Indirect Fired Water Heaters to provide the lowest pressure drops, the highest hot water output and the highest amount of effective actual heat transfer area in the industry. Regardless of the type of boiler you have in your home - hot water, steam, oil or gas - you can heat your hot water with an indirect fired water heater.

The SW-2-50R-L is a single wall, indirect fired hot water heater. It features a 48 gallon capacity and based on your boiler output BTUs, boiler water temperature and water inlet temperature, your first hour ratings will vary.

As an example, the DOE Water Heater Performance for this hot water heater is as follows:
    • Boiler output of 220,000 BTUs, boiler water temperature of 200°F and a 50°F water inlet temperature:
      • First hour rating for 140°F water is 297 gallons assuming approximately 4.2 gallons/minute of continuous draw
      • First hour rating for 115°F water is 447 gallons assuming approximately 6.7 gallons/minute of continuous draw
The AHRI Water Heater Rating for this hot water heater use the following assumptions:
    • Boiler output of 157,000 BTUs, boiler water temperature of 180°F
      • First Hour Delivery: 265 gallons
      • Continuous Draw Rating at 135°F: 235 gals/hr.
      • Standby Heat Loss Rating (°F/HR): 0.9
      • Heat Source Flow Rate: 13.7 gals/min.
Hydrojet® Total Performance System: The Hydrojet® Total Performance System is a cold-water inlet tube that was especially engineered to reduce costly sediment buildup and create more thorough mixing of incoming water with stored water. Because of more efficient mixing, extreme temperature differences throughout the tank are greatly reduced. Water Heaters with the Hydrojet Total Performance System don't have to work as hard or as often to maintain a maximum supply of hot water at the desired temperature. They heat water faster and use less energy to do it. And, it’s standard equipment on all Bradford White top connect residential water heaters.

Vitraglas® The World's Best Enamel Tank Lining: Bradford White water heater tanks are protected from the corrosive effects of hot water by an exclusive enamel lining. The exclusive Vitraglas enamel lining is uniquely formulated and applied to the interior of the water heater tank.

Our test results prove that Vitraglas provides unsurpassed protection against failure when compared to other water heater linings.

Like most indirect water heaters, this one offers limited lifetime tank and heat exchanger warranties because there is less wear and tear on the tank as there is no "direct fire".
